Ella Chose

Ella chose
to lose one shoe
knowing that
your eye she drew.
Away she flew,
houseward bound,
knowing that
you'd come around
with shoe you'd found
of shining glass,
knowing that
no one could pass
as your brown lass.
For who could make
such a shoe
that wouldn't break
first step she'd take?
Ella chose
to keep one shoe
knowing that
it'd see her through—
debt would accrue,
but it'd be worth
it every time
to have that mirth
and dance on earth
outside the fence
Stepmother built
as a pretense—
keep faeries hence.
Ella chose
to lose one shoe
knowing that
the fae speak true
with words askew
and what they say
would save her if
she'd not betray
nor go astray
from path they set—
she'd pay her debt.
Ella chose
to keep one shoe
knowing that
she'd count on you
to see her clue
and win her free.
And do you love
her, Queen-to-be?
