I do not know the songs of my people.
I know the names Adrienne Rich, Audre Lorde,
Cherrie Moraga, Sappho.
I have read a little Moraga, some Sappho.
There are many more names.
I have not read them.
"Poetry is not a luxury," Lorde says:
It's how we shape our world,
our hearts and minds.
I do not know the songs of my people.
I write what I know.
I know nothing of what has come before me.
"Poetry is not a luxury," Lorde says:
It's how we give names to the nameless,
voice to the voiceless,
power to the powerless.
I do not know the songs of my people.
But I want to sing.
