battling depression

Battling depression.
It sounds as though an army
of soldiers, pikes in hand,
are rushing the enemy.
It sounds as though a battalion
of archers have arrows on the string
to loose at your command.
In life it's not that simple,
not as straightforward as
have better strategy
and better tactics
and better fighters
and better weapons
and you'll win.
Your only fighter
is yourself.
Your only strategy
is 'don't give up'.
Tactics vary,
from the deep calming breath
to the day off work.
Weapons vary
from reading cheerful stories
to pouring soul into poetry.
Battling depression
is not as simple
as armed battle.
And yet it is as simple
as getting out of bed
and doing something with your day.
