mater, filium

I want to ask my mother
who majored in English in college
and wrote her senior project
on Edna St. Vincent Millay
if she will read my poems
and tell me which are best.

I want to ask my mother
if she will read my poems
without being saddened
by how queer and feminist
my poems are, must be.

I want to ask my mother
if she will read my poems
without reacting poorly
to the one describing me
as genderqueer,
named Alex
(not the name my mother gave me).

I want to ask my mother
if she really does love me
unconditionally
the way she says she does.

I want to ask my mother
her honest opinion
on the quality of my poetry
but how can I without asking her
questions I don't dare voice?
