what little genderqueer individuals named Alex are made of

I am made of books: the worn copy of The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe with the spine numbered 1, the falling-apart copy of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, the redheads on the covers of Tris's Book and Dragonsong, the gold wings on green skies of Dragonflight.

I am made of the scent of English muffin bread as it bakes in the bread machine, of the taste of chocolate chip cookie bars.

I am made of New Jersey, Ohio, Florida, Mississippi, Pennsylvania, Delaware. I am made of Ireland and England, Germany and France and Scotland, 'Martha Fox' of the Patawomeck nation and Myles Standish of the Mayflower, who killed many people of the Narragansett and Massachusett nations.

I am made of rosemary. They say that rosemary grows strong where the woman of the house is strong. There is more rosemary drying in this basement than fresh on the bush and yet the bush is nearly as large as it has ever been.

I am made of books I have not yet written.
