Harvest Gold [written for [community profile] rainbowfic]

"Harvest Gold"

The first chill autumn's breezes sweep
Across the tall green trees,
And into action faeries leap
With their long-practiced ease.

Awake from slumber! Naptime's done!
Cries one fae to a friend.
For winter southward goes the sun
And summer's at it's end.

Let bloom the asters! Turn the leaves
To orange, red, and gold!
Time for bringing in the sheaves
Against the winter cold!

Shake loose the leaves from every tree
And let the children play!
From school time they're no longer free,
So let them have this day!

There will be plenty time to come
And more leaves yet to rake;
Enjoy the now, don't be so glum—
There's pumpkin pie to make!

Day and night have equal passed,
And backwards turns the clock:
The autumn fae are done at last
And now will sit and talk.

It's time to spin and time to knit
The scarves and sweaters warm,
And time for winter fae to flit,
Each snowflake in the storm.

Autumn's gone and winter's come
Oft by Thanksgiving Day.
The first frost kills chrysanthemums,
For nothing gold can stay.
